Bringing Brainy Back
Yup - it's that time of year again. Time to start planning your costume for the 2010 Silver Spring Zombie Walk. For those of you lucky enough to be a part of last year's unparalleled success, we expect things to only get bigger. Last year, the crowd quickly outgrew the available space at the designated start point of the Quarry House. That having been said, people poured into Piratz Tavern, Olazzo - pretty much any place that would allow zombies and served booze. Seemed like a winning combination. Some even poured out into the streets, and we were lucky enough to have the Montgomery County Police Department provide traffic and crowd control so no one got hurt. We can't thank them enough, and we plan to send a letter along with a fruit basket or something alerting them to this year's walk.

Jackie Greenbaum has graciously offered the use of Sidebar and the Backroom - both adjacent to her eponymous restaurant at Georgia and Sligo - for the pre-walk party. While the numbers may still crowd the place, it's a far cry from a small basement. And it allows for a longer walk past a wealth of retail storefronts. Much more opportunity for wreaking havoc. Additionally, Fire Station 1 (at Georgia and Silver Spring) will be a prime place for additional gathering and overflow, as needed. More details to come.

The Movie
AFI Silver Theatre has arranged a showing of George Romero's cult classic Dawn of the Dead (1978) to cap off the walk. The movie starts at 9:45, and get your tickets early. Last year first show sold out, and AFI had to run an overflow show later in one of the smaller theaters. For those in the mood for a double feature, AFI will follow that up with a midnight showing of the Italian horror flick Suspiria (1977) about a coven of witches disguised as the staff of a ballet academy.

Zombie Walk Map

The walk will start at the intersection of Georgia and Sligo and proceed north on Georgia Avenue.

If anyone is gathered at the plethora of places along Georgia Avenue (Fire Station 1, Olazzo, Quarry House, Piratz Tavern, etc.), they can easily join in the walk as it heads up the street. We'll continue up Georgia to Ellsworth and head east through downtown Silver Spring. Diversions to the Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza are encouraged. Then up Fenton, left onto Colesville, and to the theater.
